A Typical Evening at LeRoc Congleton

We hold our class every Wednesday evening at Congleton Town Hall. The evening starts with a beginner’s lesson at 8pm.This lesson lasts for around 40 - 45 min and covers three or four basic moves. The evening then moves into a time of freestyle dancing for around 20 mins. Intermediate dancers are welcome to join in with the beginners lesson as a warm up and to mingle with our newer dancers, however, please understand that the lesson is taken at a beginners pace.

After the first set of freestyle we have our intermediate lesson aimed at those who have been dancing for more than 6 - 8 weeks, these moves are more complicated and usually stem from or are adaptations of the beginner’s moves. But don’t panic, if you are a new dancer our team run a refresher class in another room which goes over the moves from the beginners lesson again, and allows you to go over any bits that you are unsure of at your own pace (this session lasts for around 30 mins).

The Evening then returns to freestyle until around 10:45pm leaving you to dance to your favourite music, meet new friends and most of all have fun!!!!!

Five Myths of Modern Jive.

1. I would love to have a go, but I don't have a dance partner
a modern jive classIn Modern Jive we rotate partners during the lesson, and everyone is encouraged to dance with each other during the freestyle. This makes it ideal for those wanting to come without a dance partner or not wanting to get stuck dancing as a man.

2. Hasn't LeRoc got lots of fancy footwork?
No, LeRoc or 'Modern Jive' has very basic footwork meaning that you can learn it far quicker than other forms of partner dance and be taking to the dance floor with confidence in no time at all, Leroc does however put a little more emphasis on what foot to step back on and spinning correctly than other forms of Modern Jive, this is to put you in good stead for intermediate and advanced moves later on.

3. Aren’t those venues full of show offs in sequins?
Not at all, in fact quite the opposite. 99% of people who dance modern jive are normal everyday people with no ego and definitely no sequins. In the lesson we rotate partners so that you dance with everyone, this makes it far easier to dance with lots of different people in the freestyle.

4. Jive? So that’s to big band swing music right?
This is 'Modern Jive’; Modern Jive can be danced to any music from the Rat Pack to R'n'B and the latest chart toppers, as long as it has a beat its fine. This makes it the perfect dance for people wanting to use their skills at social dances, weddings, or a night out on the town! In fact at LeRoc Congleton we are keen for you to tell us what music you want to dance to and we will do our best to put it in our play lists.

5. These new hobbies and activities always cost me a small fortune to set up?
Unlike many dance classes run by schools and 'dance schools' LeRoc Congleton is a pay on the door class so there is no need to book a block of lessons or subscribe to a course, just turn up and dance.

There is no specialist clothing to buy from the outset, just come along in light fitting clothes and shoes that don’t have a rubber soul. Some people invest in a pair of dance shoes after a couple of months to help with spins, we can also arrange for most standard shoes to be fitted with a dance sole.

Do' s & Don’ts

DO , Ask people to dance.
The etiquette for a modern dance hall is that men ask women to dance and that women also ask the men to dance. If you feel uncomfortable asking someone to dance it is advised that you either ask one of our ' taxi dancers', a team of experienced dancers who are there each week to dance with newer dancers or stand at the side of the dance floor and someone will see that you are waiting for a dance and ask you.

DO , Ask Questions.
Both our teachers and helpers are all very competent dancers and are always willing to answer any questions that you may have about the lesson or any aspect of modern Jive. We also have a number of workshops running throughout the year aimed at a spectrum of abilities to help bring your dancing on. So whether its looking at the beginners moves in more detail or learning sensual blues and close moves there is always something to add to your dance journey.

Don't , do Air steps / Gymnastic moves.
Sadly our insurance will not cover claims for "Gymnastic" dance moves these moves can be very dangerous and I have seen all too often, beginners trying to copy such moves without knowing how to dance them safely KEEP SAFE , HAVE FUN !!!!
